I have used Stellarium in conjunction with Maxim DL to control my photometry sessions with TECMO. This is a free open source planetarium for your computer that is highly customizable. Although there are many planetarium software choices available that range from super fancy (and expensive!) to bare bones, my favorite is Stellarium. Planetarium software is particularly cool because it enables you to simply click objects to direct your telescope to point at them. Stellarium planetarium software is an open-source application which renders 3D photo-realistic skies in real time displaying stars, constellations, planets, nebulae and more.One of the most awesome features of modern amateur telescopes is that they can connect with a computer to allow control by a wide assortment of software. Stellarium is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2 and is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS.

Stellarium provides a real-time view of what the sky looks like from anywhere on earth. Stellarium is a free GPL software which renders realistic skies in real time with OpenGL. Users can fast forward the time to track the movement of stars and other objects across the sky.

It is available for Linux/Unix, Windows and macOS. With Stellarium, you really see what you can see with your eyes, binoculars or a small telescope. There is a zoom option available to simulate using a telescope or binoculars. The free software offers a built-in catalogue of more than 600,000 stars and provides the ability to download additional catalogues of over 170 million stars. Luckily there is a completely free Planetarium software called Stellarium that anyone can download to their computer that allows you to explore the heavens from the comfort of your own home. A plugin is available to provide telescope control. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
